I make tatting shuttles in 6 sizes: 2", 2-1/4", 2-1/2", 2-3/4", 3" and 3-3/8".  The shuttle size does not include any spike or hook.:

The drawing above is of a 2-1/2" shuttle with a wood spike.  The overall length is about 3", but if you measured how long the shuttle would be if it had no spike, it would be 2-1/2".

The pictures above show the shuttle sizes along with an Aero shuttle for comparison.  Since the numbers are visually, I've included a picture both with and without the sizes overlaid.

If you unsure of what size to order, I suggest the 2-1/2" shuttle, which is the most popular size.  The 3-3/8" shuttle is very large, but of course holds a whole lot of thread because of that.
